A recent study compared coeds' assessment of personality traits of those they perceived as stalkers and of partners in a 'normal' relationship.

What Is Stalking?

Stalking is a crime of obsession, and is often associated with different types of psychopathology, often an axis II, Cluster B personality disorder [antisocial, borderline, narcissistic, and histrionic] (Mullen 1999).

Depending on the stalker, behavior may range from overtly aggressive threats and actions, to repeated phone calls, letters or approaches. This behavior may go on for years, causing the victim to exist in a constant state of stress and fear. The violent aspects of stalking behavior often escalate over time, and in extreme cases can end in murder (Douglas 1998).

Since the more typical type of stalker is someone who has been rejected from a relationship but continues to pursue the former partner, Spitzberg and Vesler (2007), the researchers behind this study, were interested in investigating whether there are basic differences in personality between a post-relationship stalker and a partner in a “normal” relationship.

Stalking Study Methods

In this study 292 college students (approximately 2/3 female) were asked if they had ever been romantically pursued in a persistent and unwanted way. If they had, they completed the survey in reference to the person who harassed them. Respondents who had never experienced this type of unwanted attention were asked to base their survey answers on their current or most recent romantic relationship partner.

Study participants rated the person they were describing on three main categories:

Personality Disorder Assessment

Subjects used a standardized psychological test to evaluate their partner/pursuer for the presence of traits associated with the most standard personality disorders.

Stalker’s Social Skills

The partner/pursuer’s interaction competence or social skills were assessed using the Conversational Skills Rating Scale (CSRS), developed by Spitzberg.

Obsessive Relational Intrusion

ORI is a particular type of harassment in which the pursuer’s objective is to become closer or more intimate with the victim, and may or may not cause fear or perceived threat. The extent to which the respondent had felt pursued in unwanted ways was assessed using the 28-item ORI victimization short form (Cupach 2004).

Stalking Study Results

Findings related to the relationship between personality disorder and stalking are presented below. See Suite101 article Stalkers Who Aren't Strangers to learn more about the results of this research.

Personality Disorder and Stalking

The main question examined in this study was whether there is a difference in personality traits between people identified as stalkers and those who were not. The results revealed an association between the largely subcriminal stalking behavior and histrionic and borderline personality types.

Borderline personality traits include an extreme aversion to being alone and employment of extreme behaviors to avoid abandonment, whether real or imagined. Borderlines often have unstable and intense relationships and are often prone to inappropriate displays of anger (APA 2000).

Histrionic personality types have rarely been associated with stalking. In this study, the histrionic personality traits associated with stalking revolved around exaggerated emotional expression and perception of the relationship being closer than it actually was.

Stalkers Social Competence

It is often assumed that stalkers have some degree of social incompetence; however this is rarely measured in actual stalking research. This study did find that subjects perceived stalkers to have lower social competencies than nonstalkers. The researchers do point out, however, that since the vast majority of stalkers come from prior relationships, it appears that they at least have enough social skill to initiate and maintain a relationship for a period of time.

What a shame.. I got 2 stalkers. Woman & man. stacy a.k.a. grizbonton & billusa2000 there known online stalkers. The thought of griz tracking info on people & where they live ! Scary. These people are unstable. I found out this woman lives in ca and has a kid. Clearly this kid has a bad mom & She needs locked up. This is the worse kind of stalker people can have. She has a sick-twisted mind & will not go away. It's almost an everyday thing of her stalking people online. bill's not so bad sometimes. This stacy just is psychopath. And shows it. Since people pointed out what she's done. She's followed them around on different sites. I hate to sound a bit cruel she needs out of society & locked up in a mental hospitial.

If you are dealing with stalkers. Report them. Take it serious. They can be dangerous. Mine have been reported for a few years by different people. For all I know they may even be wanted & on the run/hiding behind computers.

Even a good idea is to get a permit or take denfese classes. I was taught at an early age to defend myself different ways. So if my stalker/stalkers comes around the police will have to call an emt before they take the person to jail. Believe me it's not a crime in america & some other countries to defend youself if they are a threat. Most stalkers you just never know what they are thinking or gonna do. Online or in person. It's creepy !!!!!!!!!!!! Stalkers are not the smaertest people in the world. Remember they are very unstable also. Don't take it into your own hands if you don't know or they become a major threat. Police only do little about stalking. There is two guys in my neighborhood arrested for peeping/stalking girls & They keep being let out over and over. Sad but true the more unstable they are these people get off & are put on meds even locked up in jail or mental hospitials for so long. Sometimes they have no room other times they get warning after warning. Nothing seems to scare these types of people. What part of does these courts not get that? Only way they might have fear is being locked up & other prisoners hating them. If you keep warning them it does no good. I tryed. And 90 % other people has in this world. They don't go away easy. Alot of us need to take a stand on stalking. It's serious. And against the law. We need to make sentences more harsh on them. JUst because it's on there record it don't phazse them & people out there befriend them knowing what they done. Then they become a danger to them.

i have been stalked for about a few years now. i work at a reputable transport company in Canada, and it has been an interesting adventure. They want me to quit the job because they think im a gay. and the big boss on the dock specifically hired people to try to annoy me, i just look at him and smile. on a few occasions i have even hired a private investigator and i told her to investigate me. She figured out its not only people at my work who are stalking me but possibly 1 or 2 of my previous employers. at this time i ran out of funds to t pay the PI so i decided to stay at the job just to see what happens next. The funny thing is, getting people to whisper "YOUR A FU**ING F*G" is all he could come up with. any ways, there is alot more details the story but i have to go to work now.

I like this article and i hope more people read it and put their comments on the page... 2 thumbs up.

LOVE IT . I am being stalked by a multiple ego psycho that has a long wrap sheet by the law. They have tons of files on her through years where she stalked people she lives in morror bay ca. Her names pamela poindexter ! She has been fired from a job or two. A woman had too get a thing on her for stalking her & her husband. Her name she goes by is grizbonton . She stalks people from ca online & In person. From what I hear & know law has done nothing in over a year. They just let it go. Why because she is mental? Does people who have delusional disorder get a jail free card now?

SKITZ O DISORDER FORMER FELON WOMAN: This woman has so many reports & files on her from people in a 3 year period. She could beat a world record. She gets online and stalks ca people . She also stalks people in person. She is not only a net stalker she stalks people in person. Grizbonton is one account and stacy is her alter ego . Her real name is pamela poindexter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The law needs too stop giving her a jail free card and lock her up in a mental hospitial with a straight jacket. They may wanna re-think of where too lock her up. Jail is not doing any good. I lost count of how many of us in ca has pressed charges on her or filed reports.

Yeah I think pamela is just slow or really ignortant. Don't pay attention to her. She is nuts. But lol seriously I was reading comments on her from websites why would you make a twitter knowing you a former felon with files on you from the police ? She has a history of stalking in morror ba ca. Posting on websites that has comments over 3 years old no one reads . She posts though. Cause her and her multiple personalities reads them all. I heard she files false reports on her hubby's ex wife . She's been filed to leave him alone and won't. She won't leave the new wife alone either. I can see where her pattern of stalking comes from. Her behavior she believes this is normal to stalk people. Her neighborhood has even had files on her. Pamela is more then a snooper. If you get in her way (hermind) She will stalk you. No one disagress with her or else.

Thopught it was all over and finished, now it has begun again. Gifts on doorstep and hangup calls. gifts are always red items. not sure whether to just ignore it or go back to the police. todays 'gift' was a red coffee mug with the word heart on it. He was a mummys boy living at home still with aged parent - only knew him from working in the care field for his mother. had left last year as he followed my around his house whilst i was trying to work.
